Music and the Window Seat

A heartfelt letter exploring the therapeutic power of watching the world through a window with calming music as your only companion.

Music and the Window Seat

To,

My dearest friend,

Music and the Window Seat

Do you know what the best therapy for any problem is? I don’t think you could ever guess it correctly. Let me tell you. Watching the world — laughing, bustling, blooming, spinning, changing, roaring, crumbling, burning, sleeping, breathing, smiling, everything — through a window, while soft, calming music rests quietly beside you. All kinds of loads over your body gone, just like that. Music feels like home—safe, comforting, and something you can relate to—just the sort of feeling you can get while sleeping in the lap of your mother — Just, when you need it the most.

Sometimes, life can feel heavy. It is difficult. Things can always go sideways and certainly, out of control. People are present around to listen, but none can truly understand you, can they ever?

Sometimes, people may see you as rude or distant just because you stay quiet and keep your earphones on, without realising that you are simply trying to find a little peace within yourself. Thirst to escape reality can grow stronger. You can feel so distant. Words could lose their meaning. When you lose faith in people, you stop relying on them. It is then that the cold breeze from the open window and the waves of music wash over you, creating a peace that words could never describe.

The passing trees, distant lights, and cloudy skies could understand us better than people do. Music and silence become a comfort. Music fills the space that words fail to reach. The moving roads outside feel like a reminder that life, too, keeps moving; the world never stops, and neither should we. It reminds you that everything in life is temporary — whether it is pain or happiness. It makes you forget about all the materialistic things, all the people, and all the worries.

Isn’t it the best feeling? Sitting by the window, simply looking outside the window, and listening to your favourite song.

That reminds me, I recently came across a beautiful song in Hindi with meaningful lyrics that I love listening to during my low moments. It goes:

“Kyun Roye Har Baat Mein Bandeya”
Why do you cry over everything, oh human?

“Kya Laaya Tha Saath Mein Bandeya”
What did you bring with you when you were born?

“Jaane De Jo Chala Gaya Hai”
Let go of whatever has passed,

“Kuch Bhi Nahin Tere Haath Mein Bandeya”
For nothing is truly in your hands, oh human.

You should definitely give it a try. Coming back…

Maybe that is why window seats and music feel so special. For a few moments, they allow you to escape the world and pause those noises inside your head, affirming that simply existing is enough. Well, maybe sometimes all you need is that lasting music and those good old books to be your friends.

Speaking of that, did you read A Little Life, the book you borrowed? Did you like it? It was wonderful, right? I’m currently reading another amazing book, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

Your last letter carried a sadness that made me feel like you were slowly losing hope. I may not fully understand your pain or be there beside you from this distance, but I know some burdens become so heavy that even getting through the day feels exhausting.

Let music be your companion. Sometimes, it understands our hearts better than people ever can.

With love,

Your forever annoying friend (haha),

Shreya
